What is it about fantasy swords that capture the minds and hearts of collectors around the world? Does it have something to do with humanity’s love affair with both the sword and fantasy tales? I think it does. In the past decade alone, fantasy films and novel sales have accounted for billions of dollars in revenue. Everyone I know (even those who don’t consider themselves fantasy fans) has seen films such as Lord of the Rings, Eragon, and Harry Potter. These film properties have several things in common. They are all based on novels, they all have incredibly developed worlds with deep characters, and swords figure heavily into them. Even though most people think purely of magic when recalling Harry Potter, you must not forget the sword of Godric Gryffindor, which figures heavily into the series. This all translates into sales of collectors items associated with the films, and this often means swords. Even people that aren’t sword collectors will often have one of these fantasy swords hanging somewhere in their house!
