Mouth sores are symptoms of a disease or condition and it is very annoying having one. Bacterial, viral and fungal infections causes mouth sores to occur. However dental appliances may also be a culprit such as unfitted dentures, orthodontic wires and also sharp edges of broken tooth and fillings.
There are several types of mouth sores but the most common is canker sores. Canker sores are indicated by small ulcers which are white or gray in color and having a red border, and it can last from two to three weeks and its cause is uncertain however some studies reported that it is caused by hormonal changes or immune system problems.
Stress, fatigue, poor nutrition and folic acid deficiency are some of the factors that triggers canker sores to occur. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease which are both intestinal problems are also reported to be causing canker sores.
Canker sores may go away in a week or two but there are medications that can speed up its healing. Proper oral hygiene is still important, preventing bacteria in the mouth is also preventing the conditions to get worse. Regular brushing and flossing are the best way in keeping bacteria away from your mouth.
