All surgical procedures are generally considered to be expensive. The cost of the facility, the equipment, and the skilled professionals who administer anesthesia and perform the surgery often adds up to a significant sum. Most medical procedures, however, are at least partially covered by health insurance policies so patients do not have to pay all of the fees themselves. Elective surgeries, such as breast augmentation, are not covered by medical insurance. To keep from restricting the availability of their services to only the wealthy, most plastic surgeons participate in programs that provide complete breast augmentation and implant financing to patients who cannot pay for the entire cost of their surgery up front.
