It used to be that billboards were enough to get attention for a film. Limited theaters and viewing venues narrowed the number of place available to go to see a film. Word of mouth about a film made a big difference in the success of a film. The film industry nowadays has a tougher time promoting films since there are a lot more films being made. Getting attention for a film before it is even finished is a job for unit publicists. These publicists create buzz for a film during its filming by making sure that the public knows the who, what, where, how and when way before its official release. That buzz can make a big difference when the film opens.
